This guide uses official Odd Fellows, Grand Lodge, and lodge sources. Procedures, prices, and event access can vary by jurisdiction and lodge.
What happens after you decide to apply
The Sovereign Grand Lodge describes a clear overall path: connect with a local lodge, work with a current-member sponsor, submit the application and initiation fee supplied by that member, meet an interviewing committee, receive a lodge vote, and—if elected—receive an invitation to an initiation ceremony. Its guidance also says a person without a sponsor can be connected with someone to guide the process. [1]
The Grand Lodges of Pennsylvania and California publish comparable lodge-level sequences. Their descriptions include an application, an investigation or interviewing committee, a report to the lodge, a member ballot, notice of the result, and an initiation date for an elected candidate. [2] [3]
Why there is no universal number of days
A membership timeline depends on the lodge calendar, committee availability, the ballot date, and initiation scheduling. Massachusetts gives a useful state-level example: its membership page describes applications, interviews, reports, ballots, and initiation as steps tied to successive lodge meetings. It notes that many lodges meet only twice a month, so even its example anticipates at least a full month before an applicant hears about election, with initiation planning potentially taking additional weeks. [4]
That is an example, not an IOOF-wide service standard. A responsible local answer comes from the specific lodge handling the petition. Avoid anyone who promises a fixed membership date before the lodge has reviewed an application.
Questions that make the next step clear
Once you have made first contact, ask the lodge to walk you through its own calendar. The goal is not to rush the process. It is to understand what happens next and decide whether the lodge is a good fit.
- When can I meet members and discuss sponsorship?
- At which meeting will an application be presented?
- When can the interview committee meet?
- At which meeting could the committee report and the lodge ballot?
- If elected, when are initiations usually scheduled?
