This guide uses official Odd Fellows, Grand Lodge, and lodge sources. Procedures, prices, and event access can vary by jurisdiction and lodge.
Start with the official Lodge Directory
The Sovereign Grand Lodge directs prospective members to the IOOF Lodge Directory to find a nearby lodge. The directory includes local-lodge listings and jurisdictional Grand Lodges. It says Grand Lodges appear at the top of their state or province category and invites people seeking a lodge or membership information to contact the relevant Grand Lodge. [1] [2]
Search by your state or province, then open the listings for the area you want to visit. Use the contact method shown on the actual lodge or Grand Lodge page rather than relying on an old search-result snippet, third-party map pin, or social profile.
When the closest listing is unclear
The directory itself cautions that its map does not yet contain every lodge and that individual lodges maintain their own listings. A missing pin is not proof that there is no lodge near you. Check the jurisdiction’s directory category and contact the Grand Lodge if the local information is incomplete. [2]
The Sovereign Grand Lodge describes Grand Lodges as the regional bodies that oversee subordinate lodges and says they can provide lodge information or answer questions about becoming a member. If you are not sure which jurisdiction to contact, its contact form asks for your city, state or province, and country and includes a lodge-locations link. [3] [4]
What to write in the first message
Keep the inquiry short and specific. Say where you live, that you are interested in learning about membership, and that you would like to know the most appropriate next step. Ask about the current contact route or a suitable public or guest event instead of assuming a walk-in visit, a particular meeting time, or an immediate application.
As a state-level example, Massachusetts directs people who do not already know a member to use the lodge directory information or ask the Grand Secretary for help finding the right lodge. [5] The correct contact path is always the current one published by the lodge or its Grand Lodge.
- I live in [city or area] and am interested in learning about Odd Fellowship.
- Which lodge is closest, and what is the current way to contact it?
- Is there an upcoming social, community event, or guest-friendly visit that would be appropriate?
- Who can explain the lodge’s current membership process and next steps?
